Northwestern to play host to Blood Drive Sept. 23-24

Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Alva campus is partnering with the Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) to hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23-24, in the Student Center Ranger Room.

The blood donor goal for the Northwestern President’s Leadership Class-sponsored event is 74 blood units each day. This event is open to the public.

All blood donors will receive a free limited edition “Together We Can Move Mountains” t-shirt, free health screenings and donor rewards points. Free pizza will be available, and all donors will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a $25 gift card.

Donors will need a photo ID available to give blood.

“We have a great need for donors this year as one of our own families is in need,” Janet Valencia, service learning coordinator, said.

Valencia said Ethan and Bailey Murray are expecting their fourth baby. They have three boys and have endured several miscarriages, so this pregnancy has been extremely stressful. The doctors will be taking the baby at 37 weeks if mom makes it that long. This will be sometime around the end of October.

Valencia said they have been told the baby will require regular transfusions for at least the first three months after birth. Bailey is a stay-at-home mom, and Ethan owns a large oil company located on the highway just outside of Hinton. Brooke Fuller, an adjunct instructor for Northwestern and an Alva resident, is Bailey’s sister.

“Please mention that you want to give credit to Baby Murray to help defray costs,” Valencia said. “The OBI staff will have a form for you to fill out to give credit to Baby Murray. Let’s move some mountains for this family and many others! Ride, Rangers, Ride!”

Those wishing to donate are encouraged to go online and make an appointment. To make an appointment for Monday, Sept. 23, visit www.yourbloodinstitute.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/300390.
