"Shop for Tuition" Family Day Winners

Special awards were presented at halftime of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University football game Saturday. Traveling the furthest distance to attend Family Day are Lisa and Irene Cal of Fullerton, California. Shopping for Tuition scholarship winners are Nick Castillo, $200 winner; T.W. Beiswanger, $300 winner; and Cy Walters, $500 winner.

Family members and friends joined their students at Northwestern Oklahoma State University Sept. 24-25 for annual Family Day events, both on- and off-campus.

Students and their families were able to “Shop for Tuition” on Friday and Saturday by visiting several Alva merchants to register for a $500, $300 or $200 tuition giveaway from the Northwestern Foundation.

Winners of those tuition scholarships recognized at halftime of the football game included Cy Walters, Watonga freshman with an undecided major, who won the $500 tuition giveaway; T.W. Beiswanger, Alva senior majoring in agriculture, the winner of the $300 tuition prize; and Nick Castillo, Waynoka sophomore majoring in business administration, the $200 tuition prize winner.

Traveling the furthest distance to attend Family Day this year are Lisa and Irene Cal, who came 1,103 miles from Fullerton, California, to see Wilson Cal, Fullerton, California, a sophomore majoring in health and sports science, who is No. 11 on the Ranger football team.

Nearly 80 families registered in the Student Center Saturday for door prizes and receive welcomes and university updates from Calleb Mosburg, dean of student affairs and enrollment management, and Dr. Bo Hannaford, executive vice president. They also received tickets that would allow them free entry into both the Ranger volleyball and football games that day.

Corn hole games were made available to families during the day, as well as campus tours, and both the Northwestern Bookstore and Ranger Market were open.

A new event happening simultaneously in Alva – the Northwest Mural Fest sponsored by the Alva Mural Society -- was incorporated into Family Day events this year allowing students and their families to become better acquainted with the community of Alva by participating in the “Murals and Memories” scavenger hunt to find the more than 30 murals in town, including three new ones that were painted for the festival. The families took selfies at the murals then showed their photos to Northwestern Scholar Ambassadors during registration in the Student Center to earn points for discounts to the Northwestern Bookstore.

The Northwestern Foundation and Alumni Association staff also played host to a free lunch for Northwestern alumni and their children who currently are attending the university.

John Allen, director of alumni relations, said they had a full crowd in the Ranger Room for their second annual event with many of the families stopping by the President’s Suite at Ranger Stadium later for the football game.

“Given the increase in the number of guests from our 2019 luncheon, the Ranger enthusiasm and the positive comments from our guests, we look forward to hosting this event in the future,” Allen said.

Rounding out the day’s events was a tailgate meal before the kickoff of the football game at Ranger Field.
