Northwestern Department of Social Sciences presents Teaching American History Cold War Seminar
September 13, 2024
The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Department of Social Sciences invites you to the Enid Campus for a free seminar offered by Teaching American History.
The seminar is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Room 124. Lunch will be provided for attendees, courtesy of Teaching American History.
The rise of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union is a story that has often been told. How did these developments abroad affect life in the United States? “Cold War on the Home Front: 1945 – 1954” is a one-day seminar led by Eric Pullin, associate professor of history and Asian studies at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Pullin earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Rockford College, a Master of Arts in history from Northern Illinois University, a Master of Arts in Labor and Industrial Relations from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
“This is a great professional development opportunity for our teacher candidates and area teachers,” said Jana Brown Pittman, instructor of history at Northwestern and organizer of the event. “Even if you are not a history teacher, the discussion is very informative and interesting.”
The seminar will focus on postwar anti-communism, culminating in the McCarthy Era, but will also focus on changes in home and family life, as well as popular culture and religion in the postwar period.
This program will be conducted as a discussion, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings, with Pullin facilitating the conversation instead of lecturing or presenting. Primary sources will be made available to those who register. Registrants are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. Teachers will receive a letter of attendance at the conclusion of the seminar.
“We especially encourage registration by teachers who have not participated in a previous Teaching American History seminar,” said Cristi Putman, teacher programs administrator for Teaching American History. “Thank you for all you do to educate young citizens.”
