Artist-in-Residence to present talk, mixed media workshop Oct. 30; Works created while at Northwestern to be displayed in downtown Alva Nov. 1

October 22, 2019

Northwestern’s artist-in-residence Ashley Freinberg will present a mixed media workshop at the university on Oct. 30 and display her artwork in downtown Alva during the First Friday Artwalk on Nov. 1.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Fine Arts department will play host to an artist’s talk and collage/mixed media workshop on Oct. 30 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Jesse Dunn art annex, room 324, on the Alva campus. The event is free and open to all ages and skill levels.

Los Angeles-based painter Ashley Freinberg, who has been serving as the visual arts program’s artist-in-residence since the beginning of September, will begin the evening discussing her work and journey as an artist. A hands-on workshop will follow that will give guests the opportunity to create an autumn-themed collage by cutting, gluing and pasting materials while learning mixed-media techniques. Materials for this project will be provided as Freinberg educates guests on ways to add texture to the collages.

“The Southern California sun of Los Angeles of my young years is so vastly engrained in my way of seeing these things here and around,” Freinberg said. “Really, I want the paintings to electrify the viewer this way. Painting can be one’s salvation and ring a bell to provide strength and memory where it may have been forgotten. In the present, the subject of these paintings is disappearing daily due to chronic disease. I ponder: can painting the subject when they were voracious restore any abilities and mobility? What are paintings capabilities? I paint with this intention."

The artwork Freinberg has created during her time at Northwestern will be on display in downtown Alva at both the Runnymede Hotel and Graceful Arts Gallery during the First Friday Art Walk event on Nov. 1 from 6-8 p.m. Her work will remain at Graceful Arts throughout the month of November.
