Art show adds special food category, still life for 17th annual event

February 17, 2020

Anyone looking for inspiration on what type of art to create for this year’s NWOSU Art Society Art Show can look at pieces like these that were entered in last year’s show or visit http://bit.ly/ArtShowPics for more ideas. Entry forms are due Feb. 26.

A special category has been added to the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Art Society (NAS) Art Show this year – Food. And, for every entry into this special category, the Campus Cabinet food pantry will benefit because to enter the category, a canned food item must be provided as well.

“The Campus Cabinet celebrated its first year of existence on Jan. 16 and because the art society is instrumental in getting the food pantry for our students and employees up and going, we wanted to merge the two again through the art show,” Angelia Case, NAS sponsor, said.

Case said that the food entries are not limited to only one medium of art, and there is no limit to how many entries a person submits as long as the entries come with canned food donations. All other categories are limited to two entries.

“We’re hoping to see food artwork entered in many of the categories we already offer in our art show – paintings, drawings, fiber arts, quits, photography, whatever,” Case said. “As for entering the photography category, it seems like when I skim through my social media I can’t help but notice the photos of food that people have posted. I post photos of food myself, so we thought this special category could be something that everyone could enter.”

The food category isn’t the only thing new to the show this year as a “Still Life” category has been added to the list in Paintings, Works on Paper and Photography. A full list of categories, descriptions and art show rules may be found at www.nwosu.edu/art/nas-art-show. Also, if looking for the types of entries the show has received in the past visit http://bit.ly/ArtShowPics.

Current students and employees, retired employees and alumni of the university from all campus locations are eligible to enter, but they must get their registration forms submitted no later than Feb. 26. Artwork should be delivered to the J.W. Martin Library on March 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show will take place in the library March 8-27 during the hours the library is open. The library is closed on Saturdays and also will be closed March 16-18 for Spring Break.

Awards for non-students will be ribbons for first, second and third while students will win ribbons and prize money -- $15 for first, $5 for second and $2 for third. A Best of Show winner for students as well as non-students will be selected from among all first-place winners with the student winning a ribbon and $75, and the non-student getting a ribbon. One People’s Choice ribbon and a cash prize of $50 will be given to the student or non-student artist whose work is voted the best by those attending the show.

All artwork that earns an award in this show will be moved to the Winners’ Show that will take place in downtown Alva during the First Friday Art Walk April 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Runnymede.

Non-winning art from the campus show may be picked up at the library by 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 1. Artwork from the Winners’ Show at the Runnymede may be picked up at the end of that show at 8 p.m. or from Ryerson Hall 211 by 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 8.

The Student Government Association is a co-sponsor of this art show.
