Nearly 250 pieces of artwork are on display until March 26 in the J.W. Martin Library at Northwestern-Alva for the 18th annual NWOSU Art Society Art Show. A Winners’ Only Show is April 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Runnymede during the First Friday Art Walk.

An oil painting and a colored pencil drawing are the Best of Show winners in the 18th annual Northwestern Oklahoma State University Art Society Art Show open through March 26 in the J.W. Martin Library in Alva.

2021 Art Show Best of Show winners

An oil painting named “A Gathering” by Whitney Buxton is the Best of Show winner in the student division, and a colored pencil drawing named “Sid Penner” by Warren Little is the Best of Show winner in the non-student division of the 2021 NWOSU Art Society Art Show.

A Gathering,” an oil painting by Whitney Buxton, Woodward junior majoring in biology with a natural history option, earned top honors this year in the student division along with a purple ribbon and $50 while “Sid Penner,” a colored pencil drawing by alumnus Warren Little of Alva, won in the non-student division that is open to all Northwestern alumni and current/retired employees.

“I'm so happy that we were able to have a show this year and that so many people participated after the year we’ve all had with being careful because of the pandemic,” Angelia Case, NAS sponsor, said. “I know it's been a tough year for all of us, so taking the time to be creative was important. Having a creative outlet can be very good for our mental health.

“I truly believe this is one of our best shows, both with talent and variety,” Case said.

A People’s Choice winner from among all items entered and voted on by patrons attending the show will be announced on March 25. This winner will receive a ribbon and $25.

All of the winning art pieces including those placing first through third will be on display April 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. for a Winners’ Only Show during the annual First Friday Art Walk event at the Runnymede in downtown Alva.

All non-placing artwork in the campus show should be picked up by 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 29, from the J.W. Martin Library.

Artwork in the Winners’ Only Show may be picked up at the end of the show on April 2 at 8 p.m. from the Runnymede. Artists are highly encouraged to attend this winners’ show.

Any remaining artwork may be picked up from Ryerson Hall 211 by 5:30 p.m. on April 5.

Case encourages everyone to start now on working toward next year’s show.

“We will have all categories for the 19th annual show ready to go before the end of the spring semester so you’ll know how to create over the summer,” Case said.
