Northwestern to Play Host to Sheldon Russell for Visiting Writer Series

March 9, 2022

Sheldon Russell

Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Department of English, Foreign Language and Humanities will play host to author and Northwestern alumnus Sheldon Russell for the Visiting Writer Series on Wednesday, March 30, at 5:30 p.m. in the Joe J. Struckle Education Center, room 109, in Alva.

Northwestern students, faculty and staff as well as local and area community members are welcome to partake in his visit as he reads selections from his recent novels, “A Particular Madness” and “Time and Again.” After the reading, Russell will take questions from the audience and sign books. This event is free, and familiarity with his work is not required to attend—or enjoy—the event.

Russell’s work often focuses on northwestern Oklahoma’s landscape and history. He has won the Oklahoma Book Award for Fiction, the Langum Prize for Historical Literature and the Spur Award for Best Western Historical Novel.

A former Oklahoma public school English teacher and professor at the University of Central Oklahoma, Russell has published 16 novels. He currently resides with his wife Nancy, a sculptor, on their ranch in Waynoka.

“I am truly excited to have Sheldon Russell visit Northwestern,” Dr. Matthew Lambert, assistant professor of English, said. “I’m currently reading one of his most recent novels, “A Particular Madness,” and enjoying his depiction of Oklahoma in the late 19th/early 20th century. He's got a knack for creating landscapes that are as central to the story as the characters.”

The Visiting Writer’s Series is a way to bring Oklahoma Writers to northwest Oklahoma every spring to discuss writing, the publishing industry and to share their work. This annual series is made possible through donations and raised funds. Anyone interested in giving a tax-deductible donation to the series or who has questions about it may contact Dr. Roxie James, assistant professor of English and chair of the Department of English, Foreign Language and Humanities, at (580) 327-8474 or rjjames@nwosu.edu.
