Northwestern Social Sciences Set Annual Constitution Day Observance Discussion for Sept. 29

ALVA, Okla. — The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Institute for Citizenship Studies and Department of Social Sciences will play host to the annual Constitution Day Observance Monday, Sept. 29, from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ranger Room on the Northwestern-Alva campus. Event is free and open to the public.
This year’s topic is titled, “Presidential Pardons: A Closer Look at a Second Chance.”
Co-Founders and Co-Executive Directors of the Northwestern Institute for Citizenship Studies Dr. Aaron Mason, professor of political science, and Dr. Eric Schmaltz, Northwestern Social Sciences department chair and professor of history and global studies, will explore the constitutional authority of the Executive Branch to grant pardons, commute sentences and otherwise lessen or eliminate issues of guilt and punishment. The program will also examine how the public views this unique presidential power and highlight notable historical examples of its use.
Following the presentation, the audience will be invited to join in an open discussion and Q&A session. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions to help spark a robust exchange of ideas. Free snacks and beverages will be provided.
