Nursing and business students have a new scholarship opportunity available to them at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The Lee and Peggy Mackey Scholarship was established by Alva natives, Lee and the late Peggy Mackey, to provide financial assistance to Northwestern students.

The Mackeys were married in 1975. They attended Northwestern for some time before Lee transferred to Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State University. He graduated with a degree in animal husbandry. Peggy later returned to work at Northwestern.

The Mackeys farmed and ranched their entire lives in the Alva area. Two of their four children are Northwestern alumni. Lee is passionate about supporting Northwestern and sees the value it brings to northwest Oklahoma.

“Establishing this scholarship will help Northwestern recruit and educate students in the fields of business and nursing,” Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president, said. “Peggy would be proud of the legacy she has helped to build, and we are grateful to Lee for understanding the importance of investing in our students.”

Lee and Peggy established this scholarship because of the great benefit that quality nurses and business owners bring to the area. Lee wishes to help students continue their education and finish their degrees so that they can be productive citizens in their communities and strong professionals in their careers.

Full-time, continuing students with a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average are eligible for the Lee and Peggy Mackey scholarship. Applicants must be nursing or business majors. The scholarship may be applied toward university-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, room and board.

Preference will be given to applicants from Woods County. To be considered, students need to contact the department chair within these departments to apply for this scholarship.
