30 Students Register, Learn Skills During Northwestern eSports Day Camps in June
July 2, 2025

Students learn more about the game “Super Smash Bros” during the esports camp at the Northwestern-Alva campus on June 28.
Thirty students in grades 6-12 registered to learn new skills at one or more of the three one-day esports camps at Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Alva and Enid campuses in June.
Dr. Tim Maharry, chair of the Northwestern Mathematics and Computer Science Department, said that 18 students attended the June 14 camp in Alva, where students learned more about competing in the game “Marvel Rivals.” On June 21, nine students took part in the Enid campus camp to learn more about “Super Smash Bros.” And, 14 students attended the June 28 camp in Alva to learn about “Super Smash Bros.”
Northwestern’s Computer Science program and eSports team, with funding from the Buckles and Tucker Endowments, sponsored these camps.
Evan Vaverka, instructor of computer science and Northwestern’s eSports manager, said the main goal of the camps was for the students attending to have a fun day of playing video games, to grow their skills and meet like-minded players.
College-level players also helped coach and participated with camp attendees.
