University Outdoor Tennis, Basketball Courts to be Refurbished

September 14, 2018

The outdoor tennis and basketball courts at Northwestern Oklahoma State University will be refurbished, with work scheduled to begin Sept. 17.

The Esther Blessington Testamentary Trust of Alva provided a lead gift for the project.

Included in the project is a resurfacing of the tennis and basketball courts, new lighting and new nets for the tennis courts.

“This project is needed to provide our students with another recreational outlet,” Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president, said. “Northwestern has the only public tennis courts in Alva, so this should be welcome news to residents who enjoy the sport.”

Dr. Bo Hannaford, vice president for academic affairs, who prepared the grant application to secure the Blessington Trust gift, said the courts will have a unique feature.

“The courts will feature a red and gray paint scheme that our contractor says will be unique to Northwestern,” Hannaford said. “He is aware of no other paint scheme like this in the country.”
