Watson Earns Inaugural ‘Teach Like a Ranger’ Recognition

ENID, Okla. — Last year, the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Division of Education launched “Teach Like a Ranger,” a way to celebrate outstanding educators who embody the Ranger spirit in their classrooms.

Serah Watson, a second-grade teacher at Adams Elementary in Enid, has been selected as the first honoree of this celebration. This recognition highlights educators who demonstrate the excellence, dedication and community spirit that defines the Ranger tradition.

Watson, who graduated from Northwestern in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, was nominated by her principal, Reba Gregory-Harris.

“(Watson) is an amazing teacher and a true Ranger,” Harris said.

When reflecting on her advice for current student teachers, Watson emphasizes the fundamental importance of connection.

“Make sure to build a rapport with students,” she said. “If you build relationships with them, they will do anything for you.”

Her journey in education was shaped significantly by her experience at Northwestern, particularly during student teaching.

“Student teaching was hands-on, and I learned most of what I needed,” Watson said.

After more than 15 years in education, Watson’s passion remains undimmed. When asked what keeps her motivated to continue teaching, her answer was immediate and heartfelt.

“The kids. I love the kids, and I learn so much from them,” she said.

Being selected as the first “Teach Like A Ranger” honoree holds special meaning for Watson.

“It’s honorable to be recognized for the hard work I put in and appreciated,” she said. “I also love having my first student teacher and another set of hands.”

As the Northwestern Division of Education continues to prepare the next generation of educators, Watson’s story demonstrates the profound impact that passionate, committed teachers can have on their students and communities.

“Adams Elementary and the Enid community are fortunate to have an educator who brings such passion and dedication to her classroom every day,” said Dr. Jen Oswald, chair of the Northwestern Division of Education and associate professor of education. “Her recognition in this inaugural celebration ensures that her commitment to excellence will inspire others to carry on the proud tradition of teaching like a Ranger.’”

The “Teach Like A Ranger” celebration will continue to recognize outstanding education graduates who are making a difference in classrooms across Oklahoma and beyond. Photos of these recipients will be found in the Joe J. Struckle Education Center on the Northwestern-Alva campus.
