ALVA, Okla. — Members of the University Singers, University Chorale and Concert Choir at Northwestern Oklahoma State University will present “Songs of Life, Love and Legacy” on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Alva. The concert is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Dr. Kane Bradley, director of choral studies, the three ensembles will celebrate the talents of Northwestern students and community musicians. They will present a diverse program exploring the human experience through music ranging from classical masterworks and traditional spirituals to contemporary choral compositions and popular songs.
About the Concert
The Concert Choir, a community ensemble consisting of Northwestern students and singers from Alva and the surrounding area, will present selections including Eric Whitacre’s “The Seal Lullaby,” Keith Hampton’s energetic gospel work “Praise His Holy Name!” and “Tell My Father,” from “The Civil War: An American Musical.”
The University Singers will offer a program blending contemporary popular music with expressive choral arrangements. Highlights include Jennifer Lucy Cook’s “Time,” Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes,” and a creative madrigal-style arrangement of the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive.”
The University Chorale will present a varied selection of sacred and secular repertoire, including Baldassare Galuppi’s “Nisi Dominus,” Rollo Dilworth’s spirited “Rise and Shine!” and Eric William Barnum’s “Afternoon on a Hill,” a setting of poetry by Edna St. Vincent Millay.
The evening will conclude with a combined performance of all three ensembles for “Homeland,” arranged by Z. Randall Stroope, featuring the familiar melody from Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” and text adapted from Sir Cecil Spring Rice’s poem “I Vow to Thee, My Country.”
