Heartland BEST Robotics Game Day Contest at Northwestern Nov. 7

ALVA, Okla. – Approximately 125 high school and middle school students and coaches will be at Northwestern Oklahoma State University Saturday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the 24th annual Heartland BEST Robotics Game Day competition in Percefull Fieldhouse.

The six teams attending are coming from Alva, Arnett, Burlington, Lawton Academy of Arts and Sciences, Noble and Persimmon Creek from Sharon-Mutual. Game day is open to the public to attend with no admission charge.

This year’s game theme is “Byte to Bite” and has robots completing tasks in automated food production. The robots will gather ingredients to build a BEST meal, transport the meal to the scoring areas, irrigate the garden, deploy the crop-tending drone and autonomously deliver the completed meal to the dining room.

Each team was given an identical kit of parts at the kickoff event in Alva on Sept. 5. The teams then had eight weeks to design, build and test a robot before the game day contest.

The top-scoring robot on game day wins the Game Award and advances to the regional competition in Wichita, Kansas, Dec. 4-5. The top BEST Award team also advances to the regional competition based on their presentation, video, engineering notebook and poster display.

Saturday’s Schedule:

  • 8:30-10:30 a.m. – Robot check-in and inspection
  • 10:30 a.m. – Judges & coaches meeting
  • 11 a.m. to noon – Preliminary matches
  • Noon to 1:15 p.m. – Lunch Break
  • 1:15-2:15 p.m. – Preliminary matches
  • 2:45-3:15 p.m.- Final round matches
  • 3:15 p.m. Awards ceremony

Besides the top two awards given, other special awards will be presented during the ceremony following the contest. Those awards include Most Robust Robot, Founders Award for creative design, Coach of the Year and Best Sportsmanship Award.

For additional information about the Heartland BEST contest or the Northwestern Math and Computer Science department, contact Dr. Tim Maharry, co-director of Heartland BEST, chair of the math and science department and professor of mathematics, at 580-327-8583 or tjmaharry@nwosu.edu.
