Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony and Concert Program
The program features Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, Op. 95, “From the New World,” and “October” by Eric Whitacre.
“The second concert of the season brings a full-size orchestra to Alva, with more than 50 musicians,” said Dr. Eduardo Moreira, executive director of the Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series and assistant professor of music for the Reichenberger Department of Fine Arts at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. “They will perform one of the most popular symphonies in the classical repertoire, the ‘New World’ Symphony by Dvorak. The piece was composed during Dvorak’s time in New York and was inspired by Native American melodies. The second movement features one of the most beautiful melodies of all time, played by an English horn solo.”
About the Enid Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Douglas Newell
Founded in 1906, the Enid Symphony Orchestra is the oldest orchestra in Oklahoma. Douglas Newell, artistic director and conductor, has led the orchestra since 1983 and will conduct the Alva performance.
The orchestra reaches audiences of more than 10,000 from throughout Oklahoma each year. Its home, the Enid Symphony Center, is located on the fourth and fifth floors of Enid’s historic second Masonic Temple.
Newell became the orchestra’s first full-time music director in 1983 and served 40 seasons as music director and executive director before becoming artistic director in 2023. He studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts, New England Conservatory and the Aspen Music Festival. His wife, Lawana Newell, is director of vocal studies and instructor of music at Northwestern.
His honors include the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts for Community Service. In 1989, he was one of 20 conductors selected nationwide for the New York Philharmonic’s Conductor’s Symposium.
He also received the Wrangler Award for Album of the Year from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum for the 2007 album “Oklahoma, Where the West Remains,” recorded with RW Hampton.
