ALVA, Okla. — Day of Kindness in Northwest Oklahoma is growing closer, but there is still time for Northwest Oklahoma residents, schools, businesses, churches, civic organizations and other groups to get a project registered for the Nov. 13 event.
Northwestern Oklahoma State University personnel are leading the event locally for the sixth year, bringing together campus communities in Alva, Enid and Woodward and organizations and groups throughout northwest Oklahoma. The local effort is part of the larger Day of Kindness organized by United Way of Enid & Northwest Oklahoma.
Who Has Registered
Currently, 10 Northwestern groups have registered projects, along with seven Alva groups.
Those registered from Northwestern include the Campus Cabinet Food Pantry, Distance Learning Office, J.W. Martin Library, Enid Leadership Council, Enid Psychology Club, Student Nurses Association for Alva, Enid, Woodward and Ponca City locations, Miss Northwestern contestant Lillian Kalblinger, Social Workers’ Association of Tomorrow, TRIO – Student Support Services, and the Vice President for Academics/Northwestern Administrators.
Alva groups registering include the Alva Chamber of Commerce, Alva Girl Scouts, Dream First Bank, Hope Pregnancy Center, Nam & Pops, Uplift Alva and the Woods County LoneStar OHCE.
A few on-campus activities will include the production of thank-you cards for deserving individuals and groups, non-perishable and toiletry donation drives, positive notes spread about campus and the community and the handing out of baked goods.
Community projects include anything from volunteering to help the Chamber of Commerce put up Christmas lights on the downtown square on Nov. 13 from 1-5 p.m. to organizations providing baked goods, treats and gifts to deserving organizations in the community.
Examples of Past Projects
Past local projects have also included delivering flowers or other treats to nursing home residents and local first responders, writing words of encouragement from college students to first graders, reading to children, volunteering at schools and community organizations, painting and displaying kindness rocks, businesses offering discounts on merchandise or meals for the day, and individuals or groups prepaying for drinks at local businesses.
To be added to the list of projects for the day, register using the Day of Kindness form. The web page also includes a link to the local “Day of Kindness in NW OK area” Facebook group.
Participants are encouraged to photograph their projects from beginning to end and share their photos and stories on social media using #BeKindNWOK, as well as providing the images to Valarie Case, local coordinator, to have visual representations of their projects. Organizers also welcome posts about random acts of kindness that participants witness or experience throughout the day.
