Northwestern Celebrates Family Day, Presents Prizes, Tuition Scholarships

The Doug Moss Family from Irvine, California, pictured with Northwestern Scholar Ambassador member Janie Rempel (sophomore elementary education major from Forgan), far right, receive recognition for traveling the furthest distance to attend Family Day, Sept. 28.

The Doug Moss Family traveled 1,300 miles from Irvine, California, to Ranger Field to claim the award for traveling the furthest distance to the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Family Day events this past weekend. They are the family of Beck Moss, a senior health and sports science education major.

Students and their families were able to “Shop for Tuition” all week by visiting several Alva merchants to register for a $500, $300 or $200 tuition giveaway from the Northwestern Foundation.

Winners of those tuition scholarships recognized at halftime of the football game included Bo Stewart, a freshman health and sports science education major and member of the Ranger Baseball team from Alva, who won the $500 tuition giveaway; Wilson Cal, a graduate student studying adult education management and administration and member of the Ranger Football team from Fullerton, California, the winner of the $300 tuition prize; and Johnathon Snyder, a junior instrumental music major and member of the Ranger Band from Oklahoma City, the $200 tuition prize winner.

Families registered in the Student Center Saturday to receive tickets that would allow them free entry into the Ranger football game that day. Families were also able to shop in the Northwestern Bookstore and buy products in the Ranger Market. Several family groups also participated in a corn hole tournament during the afternoon while others captured photos of the murals around Alva for an opportunity to receive a percent off from the Northwestern Bookstore. Families also were able to attend a Lady Ranger soccer game.

The Northwestern Foundation and Alumni Association staff also played host to a free lunch for Northwestern alumni and their children who currently are attending the university. Thirty-five people from 12 alumni family groups attended the luncheon in the Ranger Room.

“We always enjoy bringing our alumni together to catch up and to make new friends,” said John Allen, director of alumni relations. “This alumni event grows every year, and we are grateful for the time to share the excitement of Northwestern’s Family Day.”

Rounding out the day’s events was a free tailgate meal at Ranger Field before the kickoff of the football game. The hamburgers and hot dogs were sponsored by Alva Health & Wellness; Edward Jones; The Eye Site; Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma; G & G Home Furnishings; Hometown Dentist; Holder Drug; Ignite Physical Therapy; K & S Tire; Primerica; Rialto Cinema; Shirley Farms; Showtime Nutrition; Western Equipment; Windy Ford; and the Woods County Farm Bureau.
