Northwestern Social Sciences Professor contributes to articles in The Denver Post, Fast Company

Dr. Roger Hardaway is Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s current longest-serving faculty member.

The expertise of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Department of Social Sciences reaches farther than the campus in northwest Oklahoma.

Dr. Roger Hardaway, professor of history, contributed his knowledge to articles in The Denver Post and the New York based business journal Fast Company.

Hardaway started teaching at Northwestern in 1990, the university’s current longest-serving faculty member.

“It’s an honor to be considered enough of an expert on the history of the American West to be quoted in such widely read and highly regarded publications,” Hardaway said. “Every time the authors of these articles mention my name, they note that I am a professor at Northwestern – so, hopefully, my being quoted also reflects positively on the university.”

The Post article, titled, “A life from the land: Ranchers of color, now and in the past, make marks in Colorado,” by Megan Ulu-Lani Boyanton was published on June 18, 2023, and focused on the growing number of non-Caucasian farmers and ranchers in Colorado.

Hardaway discussed the West’s minority populations (including Native Americans and Hispanics) who inhabited the Rocky Mountain region before settlers from the United States began moving into the area in the 19th century.

Boyanton’s article can be found behind a paywall on The Denver Post’s website: www.denverpost.com/2023/06/18/colorado-rancher-of-color/

After publication, Elizabeth Segrana, a reporter for Fast Company, reached out for Hardaway’s thoughts on the influence of African Americans in cultural phenomena often associated with the American West including the cattle and country music industries.

Segrana’s article was published on March 5 and is titled, “From Louis Vuitton to Gap, the Black cowboy is fashion’s latest muse,” and is available to read online: www.fastcompany.com/91043699/from-louis-vuitton-to-gap-the-black-cowboy-is-fashions-latest-muse

“Both of those publications are leaders in their respective fields,” Hardaway said. “According to internet sources, the combined print and digital subscribers for the Denver Post is over 400,000, and for Fast Company the number is more than 750,000.”
