Northwestern Art Students Displaying Art in New Gallery Space

Feliciti Wall’s senior art show at Northwestern is on display through April 19 in the new gallery space in Jesse Dunn 218.

Several Northwestern Oklahoma State University art students are displaying their pieces in the new gallery space located in Jesse Dunn room 218.

Feliciti Wall, Alva senior majoring in visual arts, is the first art major to graduate after the minor was expanded into a full major after 36 years of its absence. Wall’s senior show is open to the public through April 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A closing reception will take place at 6 p.m. on April 19.

This show displays some of what she learned from being in the art program and is her graduating assignment.

Wall has found that learning from four different art professors while at Northwestern has been educational.

“I’m getting four different styles and teachings from new and former professors,” Wall said.

“My favorite lesson was probably the clocking method. It’s when you use two pencils to get proportions right, and it was a game changer for my art.”

Wall said it feels like an accomplishment to be the first art major to graduate since the major was reinstated.

“It’s definitely going to be something my mother will brag about, and I’m happy,” Wall said.

Three other students minoring in visual arts who will be showing their artwork in the new gallery space include Archer Bohlen, Ringwood senior majoring in computer science; Darian Smith, Alva senior majoring in music; and Rose Negelein, Pawnee junior majoring in biology-natural history. Their artwork will be on display and open to the public April 24 to May 2 with a reception from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on April 24. The gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

This exhibition will be the final project for the students in the advanced studio class.

“I believe the classes I have enjoyed the most are drawing classes like fundamentals of 2d art and figure drawing,” Bohlen said. “My favorite lessons were about charcoal drawing.”

Bohlen also agrees with Wall about learning from four different art instructors during his time at Northwestern. He said he especially liked learning about their preferences in art mediums.

“I think one of my favorite lessons is how to work with my mistakes,” Negelein said.  “When it comes to art, sometimes what started as a mistake can add a needed effect on the piece. It’s all about making mistakes look purposeful.”

Students in Northwestern’s natural history drawing class have artwork on display in the Division of Business second floor hallway.

Negelein also said that she has perfectionist tendencies and feels like the lesson was really helpful getting to finish pieces instead of dwelling on details that others wouldn’t notice.

Three students also have their artwork currently displayed in the Division of Business’s second-floor hallway in Jesse Dunn. Elayna Warrington, Alva sophomore majoring in biology-natural history; Ray Chavira, Oklahoma City junior majoring in biology-natural history; and Wall are displaying their pieces created in the natural history drawing class. The works were done in conjunction with materials made available by the Museum of Natural History in Jesse Dunn.
