Pies to the face reward for full shopping carts in three-campus food drive at Northwestern

Shopping carts are available and ready to be filled with non-perishable foods & personal hygiene items at Northwestern’s campus locations in Alva, Enid & Woodward for the “Supermarket Sweep/Pie in the Face” food drive for the Campus Cabinet food pantry.

The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Student Government Association is sponsoring an end-of-semester food drive to benefit the Campus Cabinet food pantries housed in Alva, Enid and Woodward. With the drive comes a little bit of pie-in-the-face fun, too.

Grocery carts are set up in the Student Center and J.R. Holder Wellness Center in Alva and inside the campus buildings in Enid and Woodward for “Super Market Sweep” so the food pantries will be better stocked over the summer term.

Olivia Yandel, SGA co-sponsor and assistant director of the Wellness Center, said that besides helping the food pantries to fill their shelves, another incentive to donate non-perishable foods and personal hygiene products is that once the carts are full, representatives from each campus location will get pies to the face.

In Alva, taking one for the team will be Calleb Mosburg, dean of student affairs and enrollment management; Ethan Sacket, Aline senior who serves Northwestern as SGA president, as well as Yandel. Dr. Wayne McMillin, Enid campus dean, and Dr. Jonathan Thomason, Woodward campus dean, will be the recipients of pies to the face at their campus locations.

“If the carts on your respective campuses are filled up, the pies will fly!” Yandel said. “But, the carts must be full.”

Donations are accepted from the campus community, but the public is always welcome to help.

Currently, the most-needed items in Enid include soups, canned pastas and canned meals. In Woodward, the need is canned fruit, soups, shelf-stable microwaveable meals, snacks, condiments and miscellaneous items.

In Alva, the food pantry can use just about any non-perishable foods or personal hygiene products but the greatest needs include chili, microwaveable meals, breakfast drinks, cereal, canned meats, peanut butter and jelly, toilet paper, deodorant, lotion, feminine hygiene items and other feminine products, new bed pillows, new or like-new twin XL sheets and blankets.

Yandel said the plan in Alva is to present the pies in the face during the annual Bahama Breakaway event set for April 22 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on the Intramural Field but only if the carts are full by then. The drive deadline for pies in Enid and Woodward is April 30 with the pies in the face to be shown live via their Facebook pages the first week of finals.

In Alva, community members may also drop donations in boxes located in Ryerson Hall, the J.W. Martin Library and Vinson Hall, and those items will be added to the carts in the Student Center.

In Alva, contact Angelia Case, coordinator of the Campus Cabinet who also serves Northwestern as an assistant to the dean of faculty (Dr. James Bell) and as an academic projects assistant/media specialist, at arcase@nwosu.edu or (580) 327-8577 with questions about the pantry or to request donation assistance.

Helping to coordinate the pantries in Enid and Woodward are Tiffany Misak, Enid campus coordinator/VA coordinator, who can be reached at tdmisak@nwosu.edu or (580) 213-3102, and Jewell Shepherd, Woodward junior majoring in social work, who can be reached at jnshepherd@nwosu.edu or (580) 254-2503.

Community members who would like to donate in Enid or Woodward but are unable to drop off their items at their respective campus locations may contact Jennifer Pribble, assistant professor of social work, at jlpribble@nwosu.edu or (580) 213-3148.
