Northwestern’s Charles Morton Share Trust Division of Nursing Receives New Telehealth Equipment

Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Charles Morton Share Trust Division of Nursing recently received approximately $11,100 worth of new equipment to establish two telehealth simulation stations on the Alva campus and one on the Enid campus.

The equipment was purchased by the Rural Health Projects, Inc. /Northwest Oklahoma Area Health Education Center with money from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act and the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2020.

“We are grateful for this partnership that allows our students strong preparation in regards to telehealth,” said Dr. Bo Hannaford, executive vice president. “These simulation experiences will be vital in the development of both our undergraduate and graduate students as we prepare them for our current workforce.”

Dr. Shelly Wells, professor of nursing and chair of the Division of Nursing, said telehealth has become increasingly more important since the start of the pandemic.

“Having the capability to simulate telehealth assessment and delivery will provide valuable experience for both our traditional BSN and DNP students before they face telehealth experiences in the community,” she said.   

Equipment includes computers, monitors, cameras, Bluetooth stethoscopes and otoscopes, and a breast exam simulator. BSN faculty are excited to offer this simulation capability to their traditional students as many of them will not be exposed to telehealth in their clinical experiences. DNP faculty are also excited to provide students the opportunity to simulate a telehealth visit with a focus on the use of effective communication skills and assessment skills prior to their exposure in their clinical settings.
