'I Can Granny Square' crochet lesson planned for January 25 at Northwestern

Dr. Mary Riegal shares basic crocheting information with participants of the “I Love Yarn Day” crochet workshop recently at Northwestern. A new workshop to learn to create Granny Squares is Jan. 25 from 4-6 p.m. in the Science Amphitheatre in Alva.

A beginners’ crochet lesson to learn how to create a Granny Square will take place on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 4-6 p.m. in the Science Amphitheatre at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

The “I Can Granny Square” workshop, sponsored by the NWOSU Art Society, is open to everyone but is best suited for beginning crocheters or those unfamiliar with the Granny Square.

Dr. Mary Riegel, associate professor of mathematics, will lead the session.

There are two options for the participants as far as cost. If those attending bring their own yarn and hook, the cost is free; however, if participants need yarn and a hook, the cost is $5 for the materials, but supplies are limited.

“A Granny Square is one of the most versatile motifs in the crochet arsenal,” Riegel said. “We will walk you through the process of creating a basic Granny Square and talk about the many simple modifications that lead to common Granny variations.”
