ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern women’s basketball team recorded its second SAC victory at home after hanging on 48-44 against John Brown on Monday night at Percefull Fieldhouse. The win advanced the Lady Rangers to 7-4 overall and to 2-3 in the conference.
The Lady Rangers used a 13-4 run to take an early 17-6 lead and maintained at least a nine point lead until the half. Neither team hit a three-point bucket in the half, as NWOSU was empty on five attempts and the Golden Eagles couldn’t hit on 12 tries.
After the break, John Brown quickly cut the lead to three as they went on a 10-2 run to open the half and trail 30-27. JBU again went on a spree, outscoring NWOSU 10-1 and holding a 39-36 advantage with 8 minutes to play.
Danielle Stebens contributed two free throws and a trey to bring the Rangers back on top, 41-39. Northwestern held onto the lead for the remainder of the game, but not until John Brown closed the gap to two points with 34 seconds left on three Ashley Taylor free throws. Stebens iced the Golden Eagles with 14 seconds left, making two free shots for the 48-44 win.
True freshman Annalena Farias was the only double figure scorer and turned in a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Eleven of her boards were of the defensive variety. Emily Gilbert scored nine points, while Stebens finished with eight.
The Lady Rangers shot 35 percent, hit a pair of three’s and were 12-of-23 from the line.
John Brown hit only 3-of-20 from beyond the arc on its way to shooting 30 percent on the evening. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-20 from the free throw line. Taylor led JBU with 16 points and seven boards.
Northwestern (7-4, 2-3) will play Mid-America Christian at noon on Thursday and host Oklahoma City at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
