A ceremony honoring 38 members participating in the Beat the Heat Summer Walking Club was held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 5, in the J.R. Holder Wellness Center.
The purpose of the summer walking club was to help members maintain or improve their level of health and fitness by encouraging members to walk regularly at the Wellness Center, said Lendi Gourley, assistant director of the Center.
At the front desk, participants were allowed to check out either a lap counter or a pedometer to track miles walked. A log book was kept for members to log miles walked, and at the end of each week, miles were tallied.
From June 9 to Aug. 3 members were encouraged to walk the extra mile. Three different clubs – the 50 Mile Club, 150 Mile Club and the 300 Mile Club – were created for members who reached their goals. For each mile club the members reached, their names were entered into the grand prize drawing.
“Once each participant reached their desired mile club, their name was placed on our Summer Walking Club Bulletin Board,” Gourley said.
Twenty-two members made it to the 50 Mile Club, including: Thelma Crouch, Lorraine Fettke, Mark Skinner, Debbie Skinner, Donald Penrod, Nicki Chaffee, David
Bohlen, Joyce Bender, Jerry Williams, Jesse Gilchrist, David Pecha, Kaylen Kirby,
Emily Bohlen, Ryan Penner, Kim Penrod, Mike Knedler, Ragina Knedler, Gerald Haltom, Janet Cunningham, Sharon Hill, Nelson Myers and Carmen Eicken.
Nine members made it to the 150 Mile Club including: Crouch, Mark Skinner, Donald Penrod, Williams, Mike Knedler, Ragina Knedler, David Bohlen, Pecha and Cunningham.
Crouch was the only member to make it to the 300 Mile Club. She walked that distance in just six weeks and did not quit there. She continued walking and finished the challenge by walking a total of 412.571 miles in eight weeks.
Beginning Sept. 8, the Center will play host to “Fall Into Fitness.” Members are encouraged to attend 21 classes in seven weeks.
“There are classes for everyone; just find something you enjoy,” said Shawna Copenhaver, director of the Center.
