Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s 21-voice ensemble University Singers was invited to perform as one of only 10 groups at a national music conference in Nashville, Tenn., Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 8 a.m.
The performance, which will take place in the Ryman Ballroom of the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, will be part of an In-Service Conference for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). The conference features performances by top ensembles from across the nation, music workshops, clinics and reading sessions. According to the NAfME website, the conference is intended for music program leaders, administrators and teachers looking to improve upon their techniques and teaching methods, as well as collegiate members looking to begin their career in the music field.
Dr. Irene Messoloras, assistant professor of music and director of the University Singers, said the choir has been rehearsing 11 hours a week to prepare for the conference.
“Students prepare music through individual work, sectional work, as well as with the full ensemble weekly,” Messoloras said. “We are excited to perform great music for thousands and in the process represent Northwestern and our community.”
In addition to the honor of performing at a national conference, the Singers have been in the local spotlight as well. On Sept. 22 the Singers were featured on the KFOR News Channel 4 segment “Is This a Great State or What?” by Galen Culver. The news segment praised the student choir and the progress it has made as a group in order to receive opportunities to perform away from campus.
The news segment can be found on KFOR’s website at http://kfor.com/category/news/great-state or on Northwestern’s home page at www.nwosu.edu.
