  • accumulate credit toward a degree by demonstrating knowledge they have gained independently allowing them to begin studies at a higher level. saving valuable time and money;

  • demonstrating their knowledge in a subject are to earn exemption from taking introductory courses allowing them to move ahead to more advanced courses and new fields; and

  • show their level of competency in a subject to determine placement, particularly for foreign language courses.

Although anyone may take the CLEP examination, usually those who take the tests have attained a level of proficiency in subject normally expected of college students. Individuals who earn minimum passing scores on examinations receive college credit in specific subjects.
