The Northwestern Oklahoma State University chapter of the Student Oklahoma Education Association (SOEA) was named Chapter of the Year for the second year in a row at the state convention. The chapter’s variety of service projects and participation at the state and national levels were cited during the award presentation.

SOEA annually recognizes a local campus chapter based on applications from the chapters. Points are awarded on a competitive basis in several categories. SOEA is comprised of 25 chapters on public and private campuses throughout Oklahoma. Its members are education majors who plan to enter the teaching profession. There are more than 45 SOEA members at Northwestern.

Northwestern’s service projects in the northwest region of the state include:

• Outreach to Teach – cleaning, painting and repairing an at-risk school
• Donating books – giving a new book to a Head-Start student in Alva or Cherokee
• Sponsoring a Warmth for Winter donation box on the Northwestern campus
• Carnival night – assisting the PTA members with carnival activities
• Hosting youth activities on the Enid square for the Youth Arts Festival
• Sponsoring a booth at the Halloween/Fall Festival
• Participating in a walk for children with disabilities

Professional Development Activities include monthly meetings discussing topics such as writing resumes, preparing for an interview and how to prevent bullying. SOEA attends fall and spring conferences with state speakers presenting current educational practices.

Dr. Beverly Warden, associate professor of education, and Dr. Martie Young, professor of education, serve as chapter advisers.
