Two faculty members from the Department of Social Sciences at Northwestern Oklahoma State University recently presented papers during the Oklahoma Historical Society Annual Meeting held at the Choctaw Casino Resort and Convention Center in Durant.
Dr. Aaron Mason, assistant professor of political science, presented the paper “Strangers in a Strange Land: The Historic and Enduring Plight of the Cherokee Freedmen, the Shawnee, Delaware and Others in the Cherokee Nation.”
Dr. Eric Schmaltz, associate professor of history, presented the paper “From the Russian Steppes to the Southern Plains: Germans from Russia in Oklahoma, 1889-1920.”
This year’s conference theme was “Old Cultures in a New Land: A Sense of Community in Oklahoma.” Dr. Deena Fisher, Northwestern-Woodward dean, also participated in this event as a session moderator.
