| Mary Shklar, Miss Northwestern 2016
Miss Northwestern 2016 will represent Northwestern Oklahoma State University during the Miss Oklahoma Scholarship Pageant while Miss Northwestern Outstanding Teen 2016 will represent Northwestern at the Miss Oklahoma Outstanding Teen pageant, both held during June 7-11.
Mary Shklar, Waynoka freshman and health and sports science major, will join the Miss Oklahoma Pageant’s Sigma Group. She along with 49 other Miss Oklahoma contestants will compete to be the 83rd Miss Oklahoma on the final day at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, June 11 at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center in Tulsa.
For the talent portion, Shklar will perform “Big Time” by Linda Eder. She also chose #HealthyKids as her platform for the pageant.
“I chose this platform to provide awareness for the five aspects of children’s health and how important it is for the growth of our future,” Shklar said. “I love being involved in the youth community and seeing the difference that can be made just by reaching out to adolescence!"
At Northwestern, Shklar participates in the Aggie Club, The Herd and works at the Wellness Center. Previously, she’s worked for Northwestern’s Student Services. Off-campus, Shklar volunteers for private softball lessons, helps her mother in her greenhouse, is a part of the Junior High Summer Pride Program and was recently hired as a new junior high cheer coach.
“I grow more and more everyday through the preparation that I go through,” Shklar said about the pageant. “I am a full time student, I work multiple jobs and I am running for Miss Oklahoma so the time management and just the overall growing up that anyone my age goes through has been tremendous! I have learned so much about myself in the process along with learning to have an opinion on any subject known to man! This program has guided me into the being woman that I am meant to be.”

The public can keep up with Shklar on her journey by following the Official Miss Northwestern Instagram account: missnorthwestern and by searching for #Mary4MissO on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
“Being a Ranger is choice you make every day by choosing to make a positive impact on all of those who surround,” Shklar said. “You give your best effort all the time and you strive to pass the standard that has been set before you. Being a Ranger is being a part of something much greater than yourself. Representing my university at Miss Oklahoma is by far the biggest privilege any ‘rookie’ could have! I am by far the most blessed on there just by representing Northwestern!”
Miss Northwestern Pageant Director Chesnei Thomas has enjoyed her time with Shklar.
“It has been so fun watching Mary grow since winning the title of Miss Northwestern,” Thomas said. “She exudes what it means to be a Ranger, she is caring, passionate, determined and focused. We are so excited for Mary to have the opportunity to represent our university at the Miss Oklahoma pageant.”
Miss Northwestern’s Outstanding Teen 2016 Ducky Wyatt, of Stillwater, will also attend the pageant with her platform Joy in the Cause. She will participate in the Miss Oklahoma’s Outstanding Teen events and her talent will be tap dancing to “Bossanova Baby”. The final teen competition is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 10.
