Anyone interested in digital photography is in for a treat July 29-30, when the Northwestern Creativity Project plays host to its fourth “Picture My Weekend” event – a free photography show and workshop at the Runnymede Hotel in downtown Alva.
“Picture My Weekend” is provided to help participants at all digital photography skill levels and for varying types of digital cameras.
Registration is required and is open through July 26 or until 60 people have registered. After July 26, there will be a $20 registration fee. An online registration form is available at www.nwosu.edu/photog-registration .
Anyone looking to improve their photography skills, or share their knowledge with others, is urged to register soon.
The annual photography show and reception will be Friday, July 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend to see the photographs of those who have signed up to attend the workshops. Refreshments provided by the Nescatunga ladies will be served, and the Max Ridgway Jazz Trio will provide live entertainment.
Photographers wanting to take part in the show and workshop are encouraged to bring up to four matted or mounted photos (no frames) to be displayed. Something different for the show this year includes asking participants to use their creativity to photograph a water faucet and use it as one of the four photos submitted for the Photography Show. The definition of water faucet and how to photograph it are up to the photographer. All water faucet photos will be displayed together.
Participants are encouraged to deliver and hang their photographs for the show at the Runnymede on Friday, July 29, between 4 and 6 p.m. to be ready for the evening’s public reception. All photos must have the “hook” portion of a “hook and loop fastener” in each corner on the back for quick hanging on the provided panels. A Photo Name Card template for participants is provided on the Picture My Weekend website. If necessary, participants can mail their matted photos to NWOSU, c/o Erika Birk, 709 Oklahoma Blvd., Alva, OK 73717. Photos must arrive no later than July 27.
Visit www.nwosu.edu/picture-my-weekend for specific details on how to prepare photos for hanging.
In addition to Friday night’s Photography show, three workshops will be available for those who have registered for “Picture My Weekend.” These workshops will be held upstairs in the Runnymede Hotel and will begin at 8 p.m. The “Basic Camera/Photography” workshop will end at 8:55 p.m., with the Night/Storm/Lightning Photography session running from 9 to 10 p.m. The “Basic Photo Editing/Workflow” session will continue until 10 p.m.
Saturday’s workshop begins with check in at 8:30 a.m., followed by a welcome at 8:45 a.m. The first of a number of roundtable sessions provided to help photographers at all skill levels begins at 9 a.m.
The workshop is planned to be informal for comfortable learning. Participants will select sessions of interest to attend. Topics will include Basic Camera/Photography; Ordinary to Extraordinary: Developing An Artistic Eye; Near and Far: Macro to Landscape; Finding the Light: Natural Light Photography; Ordinary to Extraordinary: Portraits, Landscapes & More; Online Photo Editing; Off-Camera Lighting; Sports Photography; Landscapes & Farmscapes in the Panoramic Format; Composition & Storytelling; From Snapshots to Portraits: How Posing Makes the Difference! and So You Want to be a Freelance Photographer?
As is tradition, participants will be asked to complete a photography assignment during the workshop with the results culminating in a slide show at the end of the workshop. An opportunity to complete that assignment has been built in to the session time periods.
This year’s session leaders include freelance photographers and stringers for Oklahoma Today Magazine and Associated Press, as well as photographers with their own businesses and local enthusiasts. They also will be participating in the Friday Photography Show.
Anyone planning to participate is asked to pre-register by filling out the form located on the workshop’s web site at www.nwosu.edu/photog-registration.
