ALVA, Okla. (10-14-11) — The Northwestern Oklahoma State University men’s basketball team is hard at work in the gym, preparing for their upcoming schedule that features old rivals, a home away from home contest and a Division I opponent.
This season’s schedule is featured by a trip down the road to Woodward, where the Rangers will take on Southwestern Christian, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (NAIA) Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC), on Nov. 16 at Boomer Fieldhouse.
The Rangers contest against the Eagles is a joint effort between the Northwestern athletic department, Northwestern Oklahoma State University-Woodward, Woodward Public Schools and the Woodward Chamber of Commerce.
The entire Rangers non-conference schedule is set to take place before the New Year.
The season will kick off on Nov. 1 at home against perennial NAIA power College of the Ozarks (Mo.). Ozarks, also a member of the MCAC, qualified for the national tournament, falling short in the national semifinals.
On Nov. 11 and 12, the Rangers will renew rivalries with Central Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State in a classic hosted by Southwestern in Weatherford.
The Bronchos from Central Oklahoma finished the 2010-11 campaign ranked No. 4 and as the Lone Star Conference champions.
Two weeks later, on Nov. 25, the Rangers will travel to take on Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio, Texas, following by a match up at NCAA Div. I Texas State on Nov. 27.
“Our non-conference schedule really challenges us because we play all quality opponents,” said Northwestern head coach Andrew Brown. “On top of the quality of opponents we play, many of them are on the road.”
“We will have a great opportunity to know a lot about ourselves by the time we open SAC play against Oklahoma Christian.”
Northwestern’s non-conference dates will wrap up Dec. 28 in Salina, Kan., against Kansas Wesleyan.
The Rangers will begin conference play on Nov. 21 as they host Oklahoma Christian in Alva. Northwestern (22-11, 14-8) finished in fifth place during the regular season and as the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament runner-up last season.
