October 8, 2007 to improve public school math, science skills Northwestern Oklahoma State University has received a $1.25 million Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to work with 10 area public schools to strengthen the math and science skills of their students and encourage students to pursue college degrees in related academic areas. The Upward Bound grant program is part of the Federal TRIO Programs that provide educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. October 10, 2007 of baseball great Mike Hargrove ![]() Northwestern Oklahoma State University will retire the baseball number of former major league player and manager Mike Hargrove at ceremonies in Alva on Oct. 27. Hargrove’s number 30 will be the first number ever retired in the 110-year history of Northwestern. “Mike Hargrove has enjoyed great success at every level of competition,” said Bob Battisti, director of athletics at Northwestern. “This is an honor he most certainly deserves, and we are pleased that he will come back to Alva for this special day.” Hargrove’s number will be retired during halftime of Northwestern’s football game with Bacone College. October 12, 2007 The Northwest Oklahoma Blood Institute college 328 units of blood from donors during the Northwestern Oklahoma State University-Alva drive Oct. 10-11. A total of 26 units were collected during the NWOSU-Enid drive on Oct. 9. Ashley Ewbank, Blood Program Consultant for NWOBI, said that Northwestern's drive was "incredible. Read more...
October 11, 2007 The first choral concert of the year will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Herod Hall Auditorium at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The concert is free, and the public is invited to attend. The Northwestern Concert Choir, University Chorale and University Singers will perform under the director of Dr. Stephen Kingsbury, director of choral and vocal studies. Dr. Ling-Yu Kan, assistant professor of music, will be the accompanist. Kingsbury said the theme would be “Chestnuts: Choral Favorites Old and New,” with the groups performing some of the most beloved choral works ever written. Read more... October 10, 2007 Dr. Beriwan Khailany, deputy minister in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Iraq, will be on the Northwestern Oklahoma State University-Alva campus Oct. 25 and 26 to deliver a series of lectures about education in Iraq and the impact of the current war in that country. Beriwan is a visiting professor in micropaleontology at the University of Oklahoma. “Dr. Beriwan’s visit will provide Northwestern students the opportunity to learn how the war in Iraq has affected its educational and governmental systems,” said Dr. Kay Decker, professor of sociology. Communications groups collecting The student organizations will collect funds from Monday, October 1 through Monday, October 15. All gifts will be given to Bradley to help offset expenses of his treatment and extended hospital stay, which will be considerable due to a lack of insurance. Donations may be sent via campus mail to Tammy Brown or dropped off at Brown’s office in Vinson Hall 110 or Jesse Schroeder’s office in Jesse Dunn Annex 235. If someone needs a donation picked up, please contact Melanie Wilderman at 327-8481. Checks and cash will be accepted. Checks should be made payable to NWOSU OBEA. October 4, 2007 The only thing better than eating a Krispy Kreme donut is buying a box full of them to help out a Northwestern Oklahoma State University campus organization. The Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature (OIL) at Northwestern will be selling boxes of the donuts for $7 throughout the month of October. OIL members have pledged to automatically give $1 for each box sold between Monday, Oct. 8, and Friday, Oct. 12, to a Bradley Gilbert Love Fund. Gilbert is a 2007 Northwestern graduate who recently was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Read more...
