Rolla placed third with a project titled “Changes: A New American and Feminine Reality.” Tying for first place in the contest were Tiffiney Walls and Erik Summars. Walls' project was titled “Socioeconomic Status and Sex Role Stereotypes Toward Women,” which also placed second in the recent Research Day at the Capitol competition. Summars’ project was titled “Habituation Learning in Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox) in Response to Thermal Cues.” Placing second in the contest was Christopher Williams and Amanda Moyer with the project titled “Which Comes First, Formal Charge or Lewis Structure: A Computational Chemistry Analysis Using Electron Density?” For more photos from Ranger Research Day, click here.

Art Society calling for entries in art show by April 9
Students and employees at Northwestern Oklahoma State University have until April 9 to pre-register entries for the Fifth Annual Northwestern Art Society (NAS) Art Show scheduled for April 13-26 in the J.W. Martin Library.

Entry forms are available in the Instructional Media Center in the basement of Vinson Hall, at the library, on the Student Government Association bulletin board and online at the NAS web site at www.nwosu.edu/art. Forms also are available in the Enid campus library and in the administrative offices at the Woodward campus.

The forms may be hand-delivered to the Media Center, sent via campus mail to Angelia Case, club sponsor, or filled out by using the Word document available on the web site and e-mailed to arcase@nwosu.eduRead more...

Third annual baseball bash set
for Enid-area Northwestern alumni
The third annual “Baseball, Hot Dogs and Apple Pie” will take place on Friday, April 11, at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid when the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Ranger baseball team hosts a doubleheader with Lubbock Christian University. The first seven-inning game will begin at 3 p.m. The event is hosted by the Greater Enid NWOSU Alumni Task Force and in- between game activities will begin at 4:30 p.m.  Read more...

Freshman Connection set for April 16
High school seniors and parents will be on campus at Northwestern Oklahoma State University for Freshman Connection Wednesday, April 16.  This day is designed for students who are planning to attend the university in fall 2008.

Morning and afternoon sessions will begin in the Student Center.  Students will have the opportunity to see the campus, meet with faculty and enroll early for the fall semester. The morning session begins at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at noon. The afternoon session will begin at 1:30 p.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m.  Read more...

Impact of service learning, volunteerism on community revitalization one of three sessions offered at symposium
Service learning and volunteerism to bring new life and opportunities to a community or area is theChristi Brungardt topic of one of three sessions scheduled during Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s symposium “Visions and Crossroads: Northwest Oklahoma – Our Next 100 Years.” The free event is Friday, April 25, and is open to the public. All three sessions will take place at 10:30 a.m. and repeated at 1:45 p.m.

Christie (Patterson) Brungardt, a 1984 Northwestern graduate now working as an instructor of leadership studies at Fort Hays (Kan.) State University, will be presenting the session titled “Grab the Bull by the Horns – Implementing Service Learning and Civic Engagement for Historic Community Revitalization, The Downtown Fort Hays Model.” This session will be in room 109 of the Joe J. Struckle Education Center.

Brungardt said that during her session she will share the importance of having a formal service-learning and/or volunteer structure on a university campus.  Read more...

Student places at Research Day at the Capitol
Tiffiney Walls of Enid, a senior psychology major at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, placed second at Research Day at the Capitol on March 31.

Her project, “Socioeconomic Status and Sex Role Stereotypes Toward Women,” was among more than 20 displays prepared by students from universities and colleges across Oklahoma. Her research sponsor is Dr. Wayne McMillin, professor of psychology.   Read more...

Mary Brune becomes certified nurse educator
Mary Brune, instructor in nursing at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, has earned the designation of Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the National League of Nursing.

Brune said the exam and certification were devised to distinguish academic nursing education as a specialty area through recognizing the specialized knowledge, skills and abilities that are included in that area of practice.  Read more...

April designated as month to raise
sexual assault / victims awareness
April has been designated National Sexual Assault Awareness and National Victim Awareness Month by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. Northwestern Oklahoma State University is among organizations that will join that observance.

Sandra Harmon, coordinator of the university’s Violence Prevention Program, said several specific projects have been developed.

Throughout the month, teal (the official sexual violence awareness color) ribbons will be displayed on bulletin boards on all three campuses with a card of explanation attached to them. The ribbons symbolize recognition of victims and survivors and promote awareness that sexual violence is a problem.  Read more...

Overton receives Martin-DaVinci Scholarship
Stefani Overton of Knowles, a junior elementary education major at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, was awarded a scholarship from the DaVinci Institute, Oklahoma’s Creativity Think Tank, at a banquet March 28.

Overton is one of six Oklahoma students designated as Martin/DaVinci Scholars for 2008. The award was made possible by a donation from the Martin Family Trust established by June Scarborough Martin and her husband Karl.  Read more...

Young Farmers, Ranchers attend national conference
Three members of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Collegiate Young Farmer & Rancher (YF&R) organization recently attended the American Farm Bureau Federation YF&R Leadership Conference in Baltimore, Md.

Attending were Marcy VenJohn, Ingalls, Kan., senior; Duke Nunley, Alva sophomore; and Rachael Paxson, Medicine Lodge, Kan., junior, as well as adviser Steve Sneary, Northwestern farm manager and instructor in agriculture.   Read more...

in Outstanding Professor's Academy
Dr. James Yates, professor of English at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, is among 20 faculty members at Oklahoma colleges and universities who recently completed the 2007-2008 Outstanding Professors’ Academy. The academy is part of the Educators’ Leadership Academy (ELA) based at the University of Central Oklahoma.  Read more...

Glenn Miller Orchestra to close concert series season
The swinging music of Glenn Miller will bring the 2007-2008 Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series to a close at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 14, in Herod Hall Auditorium at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

Graduate making name in entertainment industry
Northwestern Oklahoma State University mass communications graduate and former RangerJosh Holland basketball player Joshua Holland is making a name for himself in the entertainment industry and recently landed the lead role in an independent film.

The Chandler, Okla., native moved to New York City about two years ago to pursue a dream of being a model and actor. Since that time he has added a number of items to his resume, including film and television acting, as well as commercial, fashion, print and runway modeling.

The most recent accomplishment was announced March 28 when he was cast as Cooper, a young rookie police officer, in Joyce Jahnke’s newest police drama “First Day.”

Theme sought for Northwestern Homecoming 2008
The annual contest to select a theme for Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s homecoming is now open to the public—on and off campus. Deadline for submitting entries is 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 16.

This year’s homecoming will be celebrated Thursday, Oct. 30, through Saturday, Nov. 1.

Enrollment now open for fall, summer sessions
Enrollment for the fall semester at Northwestern Oklahoma State University will open Monday, March 24. Students are encouraged to complete the enrollment process as soon as possible to better ensure their choice of classes, said Dr. Steve Lohmann, executive vice president.

Classes will begin on Aug. 18. A schedule of fall semester classes is available on the Internet at www.nwosu.edu/schedule. Printed copies of the schedule are available at the registrar’s offices in Alva and Enid and at the main office in Woodward. Enrollment for the semester ends Aug. 26.

Campus Cleanup Day April 10
Northwestern students and employees are asked to take part in "Campus Clean-up Day" from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 10. All individuals, clubs, organizations, offices, etc., wishing to volunteer to help beautify the Northwestern-Alva campus with this service project, need to contact JoDe Bradt by Monday, April 7. She can be reached at (580) 327-8542 or jmbradt@nwosu.edu. All volunteers should meet on the west side of the Student Center for job assignments on April 10.

Psychology Club meeting, having cookout
The Northwestern Psychology Club will meet Monday, April 7, at 11 a.m. in EC202. There will be a free lunch, and the program will be by Sandra Harmon, Northwestern's Project to Reduce Crime Against Women coordinator. She will be speaking on Violence Prevention.

On April 17, club members are having a cookout at Hatfield Park beginning at 6:30 p.m.

All psychology majors, minors and anyone interested in psychology is welcome to attend both activities.

Gilbert reports on progress to chemotherapy, offers thanks
Bradley Gilbert recently sent an update on his progress to chemotherapy treatments for leukemia, and also wants to thank everyone for their continued support.

He currently is doing well, although he tires easily and doesn’t have much energy.

After visiting his doctor Wednesday for what he thought would be the first of five lumbar punctures over the next consecutive Wednesday’s in April, he learned the doctors had decided that he would not need all five, but rather only three for this course of his treatment.   Read more...
