Willie Spears, 2000 Northwestern graduate and author of the book "Keisha's Dilemma,"  returned to campus Feb. 14-15 to talk about his book, as well as share many thoughts including messages on being well-rounded individuals, getting involved on campus, falling in love with reading because knowledge is power and persevering when things get tough.

In several of the classes, Willie's message was to encourage the students to become more involved on their campus and attend the activities provided for them. He likened the features of a cell phone or nice vehicle to the various activities available on campus. They wouldn’t want a cell phone that was only able to call across town, so why would an employer or anyone else want  a graduate who didn’t take advantage of the “features” while they were in college. Being involved on campus and in the community makes for a more well-rounded individual, and that is what makes a person more successful. He said that everyone with a cell phone has experienced their phone hitting pockets without service. He encouraged the students to not be that cell phone with no features and no service. He gave the same analogy with the nice vehicle -- it has a sun roof, heater, seat warmers, windshield wipers, etc., but it would be stupid not to use the wipers if it were raining, heater when cold, etc., so it’s just as crazy not to take advantage of all the opportunities available to be involved while on campus.

He spoke to 11 different classes and organizations sharing information specific to each group. The groups included the General Psychology and Marriage and Family classes, Developmental Reading classes, Principles of Advertising, Wellness Concepts, Ethics, Ranger Connection, SPJ and OBEA meeting, the Lady Ranger Basketball team and Ranger Football team. More information about Spears, his book and speaking topics can be found at www.williespears.com.
