February 5, 2008 ![]() speak in Northwestern classes Feb. 14-15 Becoming a published book author wasn’t even on his radar when Willie Spears graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in May 2000, but on Feb. 14 and 15, he’ll be returning to his alma mater to talk to fellow Rangers about that book and other things. Since his graduation, the talented mass communications graduate from Panama City, Fla., has worked in radio, was an entertainer for a Disney cruise line and played indoor professional football for two years. In 2002, he started teaching health and coaching at his high school alma mater. He’s now in his first year as a physical education teacher and assistant football and track coach at Camden County High School in Kingsland, Ga. He’s also a licensed minister and a motivational speaker throughout the United States. Read more... 2008 A Love Fund has been established at Alva State Bank for the family of an Alva man injured in an ATV accident early Sunday morning. Joshua Hansel is in critical condition at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita with head trauma, two fractured neck vertebrae and a broken arm. He is the husband of Becky Hansel, secretary in the Division of Education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, and son-in-law of Jim Detgen, director of Northwestern’s physical plant. 2008 Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Alumni Association will be holding the Annual Alumni Basketball game on Friday, Feb. 15, in Percefull Fieldhouse. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at the fieldhouse. Registration for participants will open, and the Rowdy Rangers support group will begin serving free hotdogs to the first 300 spectators. Admission to the games is free. The women’s game will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 7:30. Former and current Ranger cheerleaders and band members are invited to join in the fun. Each participant will receive a free 2008 alumni basketball T-shirt and a goody bag. The teams will have time to practice before the games, and each game will have two 20-minute running halves and a halftime. Northwestern alumni Bennie Buckland, Mike Baxter and Bill Heydman will provide commentary throughout the evening. Read more...
January 16, 2008 Five women have entered the 2008 Miss Northwestern Pageant to be presented in Herod Hall Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8. January 30, 2008 The “Star” program is for girls between the ages of 6 and 11 and one will be chosen randomly to accompany Miss Northwestern to the 2008 Miss Oklahoma Pageant in Tulsa in June. The mentoring program is designed to expose girls to outstanding young women as role models. Entrants are Cheney Bird, 11, daughter of Skeeter and Raye Lyn Bird of Alva; Aleysa Franz, 9, daughter of Brad and Lisa Franz of Alva; MaKenzie Miller, 6, daughter of Corey and Amy Miller of Woodward; Jada Retha-Wingo, 6, daughter of Jeremy and Shelly Wingo of Waynoka; Myranda Seay, 9, daughter of Greg and Darolyn Seay of Alva; Isabella Stout, 6, daughter of Bethany Stout of Alva; and Aspen Warren, 6, daughter of Jett and Teri Warren of Aline. January 23, 2008 The 2008 class of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Sports Hall of Fame will include Brian Clothier of Edmond; Jeff Ellison of Dallas, Texas; Michael Perkins of Quartz Hill, Calif.; and Willie Tennyson of Milledgeville, Ga. This year’s class will be honored at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, and at halftime of the Ranger men’s basketball game with Wayland Baptist University that afternoon.
