'The Ranger' dedication is Tuesday

The unveiling and dedication of “The Ranger” statue will be at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. The public is encouraged to attend the ceremony, which will be held on the northeast corner of the campus.

“The Ranger” is a larger than life-sized bronze embodiment of a bucking horse and rider, the university’s most enduring and treasured symbol that serves as a focal point for Ranger pride. It was sculpted by noted western artist Harold Holden of Kremlin. Read more...

Bartons' courthouse project
now on display at Northwestern
Photos of all 77 county courthouses across the State of Oklahoma can be found in a special display through Sunday, Nov. 11, in the J.W. Martin Library on the campus of Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva.

John Barton, retired dean and speech professor at Northwestern, and his wife Margaret spent 14 days discovering Oklahoma during two- and three-day trips to specific counties this past year, setting out to see and photograph every county courthouse as a way to celebrate the state’s Centennial year. Ranger Rodeo sees three-day run

Coleman Proctor, Miami senior, casts a loop around a steer’s hind heels during the team roping event during last weekend’s Ranger Rodeo presented by the Northwestern rodeo team. Proctor and his roping partner, Kyle Linaweaver of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, made runs of 5.5 and 5.0 seconds to win the average. For more Ranger Rodeo action, click here.

Ranger Preview has large turnout
Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Ranger Preview introduced 276 high school seniors from more than 80 high schools to the university’s campus Saturday. Counting parents and families, more than 500 people were guests of the university.

Brad Franz, dean of student affairs and enrollment management, said the number of seniors who attended this year is up 20 percent from last year and that 10 more high schools were represented.

Northwestern students perform for area school children in the theatre program's children's show "Just Like Us" Friday afternoon. A performance for the public is Saturday at 1 p.m.. Admission is $1.

About 50 people attended Official Centennial Photographer Mike Klemme's presentation Tuesday in the J.W. Martin Library. Klemme will be featured in a segment on Discover Oklahoma on KWTV Channel 9 at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. For more photos, click here.

Songwriter Jimmy Webb to appear in Alva
Jimmy Webb is a legend in his native state of Oklahoma, being one of the great American song writers. Northwest Oklahomans will have the opportunity to hear Webb’s magical tunes live at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 12, in Herod Hall Auditorium at Northwestern Oklahoma State University as part of the Northwest Oklahoma Concert Series.

Tickets for the event are $10 for adults, $5 for students and are available at Holder Drug, Schuhmacher’s, Alva Chamber of Commerce and Northwestern Bookstore or by calling (580) 327-8590.

Born in Elk City, Webb perhaps is best known for his tremendously popular tunes written for Glen Campbell (“By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston”), Richard Harris (“MacArthur Park”), the Fifth Dimension (“Up, Up and Away”), Brooklyn Bridge (“Worst that Could Happen”) and others. Bradley Gilbert update
Bradley Gilbert, a 2007 Northwestern mass communications graduate battling leukemia, had been out of the hospital for a bit, but had to return Saturday, Nov. 3, because he began spiking fevers. His mother said the tests showed e-coli. The nurses explained that everyone has e-coli in the body, but most can fight it off. Since Bradley's immune system is so compromised, he could not. He is now on four different antibiotics, plus a neuprogen shot to help build his white blood cell count. His white counts are still very low, so he will remain in the hospital until those numbers come back up, which is usually seven to 10 days. Various fundraisers have taken place to help Bradley with his medical bills. To date, the Communications Department has collected about $2,500 on his behalf, and the NWOSU Art Society raised about $670 from its bake sale during homecoming.

SOEA collecting clothes for Warmth for Winter
The Student Oklahoma Education Association (SOEA) is collecting coats and sweaters for the local Warmth for Winter.

SOEA would appreciate the donation of used, clean winter attire. There will be a box located in the Education Center outside of the SOEA room 107.

They will be collecting the clothing items until 5 p.m. Nov 13. They will then take the clothes to the Church of Christ, and the church will distribute them to the people in need in the community.

“This is a chance for you to make a difference in our community, provide people with warmth for the winter season, and touch someone’s life,” said Stefani Overton, SOEA president.

Share Medical Center seeking help
Kelly Parker, director of marketing at Share Medical Center, has asked the Northwestern community for help in possibly winning a new MRI machine for the hospital. An MRI is a highly sophisticated imaging machine for taking pictures of internal organs and soft tissue, including the brain, heart, muscles, tendons, ligaments and everything else non-bone inside the body. It helps with diagnosing everything from orthopedic injuries to strokes and even cancer. Since many in the Northwestern community might need to utilize equipment such as this at some time, Parker is asking everyone to visit the following link every day to watch a video about the local hospital -- www.winanmri.com. The Share Medical Center video can be found in the drop down menu. Once the video has been viewed, a "submit" button will appear allowing the vote to go through. Press "submit" and one vote will be cast. Only one vote per day from the same computer. If there are other computers in the office or home, Parker is asking that a vote be cast from those as well, and to contact family and friends for additional help. Voting will take place every day through Dec. 31.
