Mike Hargrove's Ranger jersey retired

History was made at Ranger Field Saturday, Oct. 27, when the first ever Ranger athletic jersey was retired. Ranger baseball jersey No. 30, worn by retired Major League Baseball player and manager Mike Hargrove, was retired during halftime ceremonies of the football game.  Northwestern athletic director Bob Battisti (right) helps Hargrove display the framed jersey following comments by Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president (left). The 1972 Northwestern graduate earned varsity letters in baseball, basketball and football. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Northwestern Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and enshrined in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame, also in 1993. During the ceremony, Dr. Cunningham said that it really is true, "once a Ranger, always a Ranger." Cunningham was referring to Hargrove's days in high school as a Perryton, Texas, Ranger, then becoming a Northwestern Ranger, and then being drafted by the Texas Rangers where he made his major league debut on April 7, 1974. He was voted American League Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and The Sporting News. Hargrove was named to the American League All-Star Team in 1975. He also played for the San Diego Padres and the Cleveland Indians. He finished his playing career with the Indians, retiring after the 1985 season. Hargrove spent 17 seasons as a major league manager with the Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians. From 1991 to 1999, Hargrove managed the Cleveland Indians. His teams won five consecutive American League Central Division titles from 1995 to 1999, and captured American League championships in 1995 and 1997. He was named the American League Manager of the Year in 1993 by USA Today and won the same honor by The Sporting News in 1995. He retired from baseball as the Seattle Mariners' manager on July 1, 2007. During Hargrove's emotional remarks to those in attendance, he said that he considers Northwestern and this area his home and that it is possible to go home again and thanked everyone for the special day.  For more photos from the ceremony, click here.
