Gov. Henry proclaims Oct. 27
as Mike Hargrove Day
Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry has proclaimed Saturday, Oct. 27, as Mike Hargrove Day in Oklahoma.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University will retire the baseball number of the former major league player and manager that day at ceremonies during halftime of the school’s football game with Bacone College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Ranger Field.  Read  more...

Ranger Preview scheduled for Nov. 3
Northwestern Oklahoma State University's annual Ranger Preview event for high school seniors will take place Saturday, Nov. 3, at 9 a.m. in the Student Center.

"We hold Ranger Preview to encourage students to visit our campus to see the numerous opportunities that await them at Northwestern,” said Matt Adair, director of recruitment.

Any high school senior who attends Ranger Preview and is admitted to Northwestern as a full-time student at the Alva campus will receive the $400 scholarship.  Read more...

Art Society kicking off fundraiser
Believe it or not, Christmas is right around the corner, and the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Art Society (NAS) is offering a fundraiser to help take the stress out of locating the perfect gift.

Beginning this week, members of NAS have available a 48-page brochure containing more than 200 gift and food items that could make gift-buying a lot easier. Included in the unique selection are kitchen accessories, scented candles, jewelry, holiday and all-occasion gift wrap, items for kids, “High School Musical” items, spring flower bulbs, magazines published in English and Spanish, World’s Finest boxed chocolates, car and pet accessories, holiday decorations and more.

Oklahoma Centennial Photographer
to speak at Northwestern on Nov. 6
The official Oklahoma Centennial photographer Mike Klemme will be on the Northwestern Oklahoma State University campus in Alva Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. for a presentation in the J.W. Martin Library. The event is free and open to the public.

Klemme, a life-long resident of Enid, became the official Centennial photographer in September of 2005. Since then, he has spent the majority of his time photographing Oklahoma for the large-format coffee table book “Celebrating Oklahoma!” Klemme’s presentation will include photographs taken from around the state during this time, and some of the stories that surround these photos.

He will have copies of the book and possibly a few prints available for purchase the day of the presentation. The hardcover book sells for $59.95.  Read more...

Pfeifer-Hill receives Barton teaching award
and other photos from the Faculty/Staff Service Recognition Ceremony


Dr. Cynthia Pfeifer-Hill receives the John Barton Distinguished Teaching and Service Award from Barton during the annual Faculty/Staff Service Recognition Ceremony at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Pfeifer-Hill is professor of biology and chair of the Natural Science Department of the university. Nominations are made by faculty, staff and students and the recipient is determined by a selection committee.  More photos from the ceremony can be found by clicking here. David Washington, a carpenter in the university's maintenance department, was selected as the Thelma Crouch Staff Employee of the Year Award winner; however, he currently is on vacation and unable to accept his award at the ceremony. A presentation of his award will take place at a later date.

Northwestern receives grant
to facilitate distance learning
Northwestern Oklahoma State University has been awarded a $256,390 Distance Learning and Telemedicine grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The funds will be used to extend opportunity for interactive distance learning in seven rural end-user sites and one hub/end-user site serving 3,219 students.

The schools included in the grant are Buffalo Elementary, Byng Elementary, Davidson Elementary, Davidson High, Gage Elementary, Grandfield High and Snyder High. Northwestern will serve as the hub/end-user.  Read more...

Residents of South Hall, including Brandi Parker, spent some time Oct. 23 making jack-o-lanterns and decorating for Halloween getting ready to welcome little ghosts and goblins for trick-or-treating in the dorm. For more pumpkin fun, click here.

The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Alumni Association is taking reservations from Ranger football fans to ride a chartered bus to the Saturday, Nov. 3, game in Tyler, Texas.

The Rangers will face conference foe Texas College, and kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Group visits foundry for pouring of "The Ranger"

A group from Northwestern Oklahoma State University traveled to Norman on Oct. 15 to visit "The Crucible" foundry where the "The Ranger" statue is being created in bronze. The group went to watch the workers as they poured molten metal that is several thousand degrees hot into molds of different parts of the statue. "The Ranger" is scheduled to be dedicated in ceremonies in Alva on Nov. 13 at 4:30 p.m. For more photos from the trip to the foundry, click here.

Northwestern theatre earns seven awards
Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s production of “Foolin’ Around with Infinity” took home seven awards from the annual Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Oct. 18 at Oklahoma City University.

Winners of the Irene Ryan acting award are Amanda Schroeder, Freedom graduate student; Lewis D. Mize, Follett, Texas, senior; and Lisa Bradt, Alva sophomore.  Read more...

Iraqi education official lecturing here today
Dr. Beriwan Khailany, deputy minister in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Iraq, will be on the Northwestern Oklahoma State University-Alva campus Oct. 25 and 26 to deliver a series of lectures about education in Iraq and the impact of the current war in that country.

Beriwan is a visiting professor in micropaleontology at the University of Oklahoma.

“Dr. Beriwan’s visit will provide Northwestern students the opportunity to learn how the war in Iraq has affected its educational and governmental systems,” said Dr. Kay Decker, professor of sociology.  Read more...

Northwestern students study in Costa Rica
During Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s interim session, 23 students and three faculty members spent 19 days in Costa Rica as part of the university’s study abroad program.

Classes were offered in Spanish, agriculture, biology, management, marketing and e-commerce. Students toured local businesses and interviewed local business owners, artisans, corporate managers, farm managers and plant operators to gain an understanding of the differences between Costa Rican and American practices.

Full time students taking advantage of the opportunity were Jared Campbell, Helena sophomore; Mandy Campbell, Helena senior; Stacy Crissup, Laverne junior; Darin Frech, Fairview sophomore; Ryan Keck, Marlow sophomore; Charity Maune, Syracuse, Kan., senior; Duke Nunley, Alva sophomore; Tye Parr, Washington senior; Emily Rodkey, Alva senior; and Kindsey Schwerdtfeger, Capron senior.  Read more...
