February 6, 2007 for freshmen beginning in Fall 2007 First-time freshmen enrolling on a full-time basis at Northwestern Oklahoma State University will have the opportunity to quality for additional financial aid from the institution. Beginning with fall semester of 2007, the cap on institutional aid to qualifying freshmen will increase from $2,500 per academic year to the equivalent of tuition, fees and on-campus room and board expenses, approximately $5,500 per year depending on variable factors such as the number of credit hours taken. This does not include the use of Federal financial aid or OHLAP (Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program) assistance, which students may qualify for on top of their scholarships up to total cost of attendance. February 12, 2007 Make plans to stay a little longer in Percefull Fieldhouse Thursday following the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Ranger basketball games because an entertaining treat will follow. Members of the university’s faculty have challenged the students of Northwestern to a basketball game that Dr. James Therrell, assistant professor of education, has dubbed the Student-Faculty “Beat Down” Basketball Game. Therrell said there will be two six-minute halves, they will play full court, and the teams may be co-ed. Read more...
February 12, 2007 2007 Miss Northwestern Jordan Gaskill of Waynoka was crowned Saturday night as the 2007 Miss Northwestern Oklahoma State University. A freshman majoring in pre-med/biology, she will represent the university at the Miss Oklahoma Scholarship Pageant June 4-10 in Tulsa.

February 9, 2007 on Oklahoma land rush A 1968 Northwestern Oklahoma State University alumnus’ latest novel has been honored by the Langum Project for Historical Literature located in Birmingham, Ala. “Dreams to Dust: A Tale of the Oklahoma Land Rush” by Sheldon Russell of Guthrie is the winner in the category of American historical fiction. This award is presented to the best book published in the preceding year that is both excellent fiction and excellent history. Russell will receive a $1,000 prize during a special ceremony in Birmingham on March 17, where he will join one other winning author to briefly discuss his book and take questions. Read more...
February 7, 2007 events set for Feb. 16, 17 The rescheduled alumni basketball games and Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies at Northwestern Oklahoma State University will take place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17. The alumni basketball event opens at 5 p.m. on Feb. 16 in Percefull Fieldhouse with registration for participants. The Rowdy Rangers support group also will begin serving free hotdogs to the first 300 spectators. Admission to the games is free. The women’s game will begin at 6 p.m. and the men’s game at 7:30 p.m. Former and current Ranger cheerleaders and band members will join in the fun. Rowdy, the athletics mascot, is scheduled to be on hand, as well. Each participant will receive a free 2007 alumni basketball T-shirt and a goody bag. The 2007 class of the Sports Hall of Fame includes Dennis Rountree of Broken Arrow, Robert “Bob” Drake of Woodward and Craig Chestnut of Mustang. Read more...
February 7, 2007 Thirty-five education majors at Northwestern Oklahoma State University began student teaching Feb. 5 in schools in Oklahoma, Colorado, North Carolina and Texas. The students began the semester with a series of seminars and multicultural classes at the Alva campus. In addition to their practice teaching duties, the students will return to campus for a midterm seminar and the Northwestern’s Teacher Fair on March 28 and their final seminar on April 30. Their portfolios are due April 23 and assessment exit interviews will be May 1-4. The last day of student teaching will be May 4, with commencement the following day. February 5, 2007 looking for volunteer help The newly created Woods County Visitor’s Center located within walking distance of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University-Alva campus is looking for a few good volunteers. Alexandra Mantz, Alva Chamber of Commerce director, is working with the Woods County Economic Development Committee in coming up with enough volunteers to staff the center. The new center, located at 512 Oklahoma Blvd., opened Feb. 1 with enough seniors from the community volunteering to have it open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the month, but more volunteers are needed, which could be a great opportunity for Northwestern students.
