FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                        February 13, 2008

SPECIAL EDUCATION MAJORS CAN RECEIVE TUITION REIMBURSEMENT

Students taking special education courses can receive reimbursement for tuition costs of those courses through the Special Education pathway II Reimbursement Program of the Oklahoma State Department of Education and is funded through the State Personnel Development Grant.

Applications for spring 2008 must be postmarked no later than Friday, Feb. 29.

The program is designed to assist students attending an accredited Oklahoma institution of higher education and who are majoring in special education at either the bachelor’s or master’s degree levels.

Students may receive up to $1,500 per semester and may reapply for each semester of coursework. Elective coursework, practica, related dues, fees, textbooks and/or class materials are not reimbursable under the program.

After students have graduated, taken and passed the Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT), met certification requirements and submitted documentation, they may receive reimbursement up to $100 of the exam cost.

Mary Ellen Nutter, instructor in education, said that students who are accepted into and complete the program must work full-time for at least one year in special education for each semester of tuition reimbursement received.

Application forms and complete information about the program are available in the Division of Education office in Education Center 205.
