NORTHWESTERN STUDENT EDUCATION CHAPTER RECEIVES STATE HONORS
The Northwestern Oklahoma State University chapter of the Student Oklahoma Education Association (SOEA) was named 2008 Chapter of the Year at the state convention. The chapter’s variety of service projects and participation at the state and national levels were cited during the award presentation.

SOEA annually recognizes a local campus chapter based on applications from the chapters. Points are awarded on a competitive basis in several categories. SOEA is comprised of 25 chapters on public and private campuses throughout Oklahoma. Its members are education majors who plan to enter the teaching profession.
Northwestern’s service projects in the northwest region of the state include:
· Painting a tricycle track at Washington Elementary School
· Providing Christmas presents for residents of the New Beginnings Shelter for Abused Families
· Co- sponsoring a workshop provided by the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board (OERB)
· Sponsoring a Warmth for Winter donation box on the Northwestern campus
· Sponsoring a dodgeball tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society
· Staffing the ticket booth at a Parent Teacher Organization Fun Night
· Sponsoring a booth at the Halloween/Fall Festival
· Participating in a walk for children with disabilities

The Alva chapter sent four local leaders to the National Education Association Student Leadership Conference in Philadelphia last year, and chapter president Stefani Overton and vice president Alisha Warden held state offices, all of which gained points in the Chapter of the Year race. Dr. Beverly Warden, associate professor of education, and Dr. Martie Young, professor of education, serve as chapter advisers.
