NORTHWESTERN TO OFFER SHORT COURSE IN PUBLIC HISTORY, HISTORIC PRESERVATION

A two-day short course in public history and historic preservation will be taught at Northwestern Oklahoma State University on two consecutive Saturdays, March 1 and March 8, on the Alva campus.

The workshop will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day with the first session spent in the classroom learning about architecture, cultural artifacts and landscapes. The value of historic preservation to communities and an explanation of the historic preservation process also will be included. The second session will be a field trip to tour historically significant structures in the region.

Dr. Kay Decker, chair of the Social Sciences Department, said the course would be suited for municipal and county government officials, business owners, land owners and historic property owners.

If desired, the class may be taken for one hour of college credit in history, and 16 hours of continuing education credits will be available to current educators. For individuals who do not wish to take the class for credit, the one-time fee is $40.

For more information about the course, interested persons should contact Decker at (580) 327-8521 or kldecker@nwosu.edu.

Decker said this is the first course in a series of classes in the field of public history. Next fall, a museum and gallery studies class will be held.
