THREE FROM NORTHWESTERN HONORED BY BROADCAST ORGANIZATIONS

Three Northwestern Oklahoma State University mass communications majors were honored Friday by the Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association (OBEA) and the Oklahoma Broadcast Association, OBEA’s professional organization.

Allison Cunningham, Alva junior, received the $2,000 Saidie Adwon Scholarship, one of only six scholarships awarded to college students statewide by the organization.

Clayton Holub, Garden City, Kan., senior, placed third for television directing, and Kacey McCulley, Hennessey junior, and Fanchon Smith, Garland, Texas, sophomore, won third place in television sports play-by-play.

“I am very pleased with the awards Northwestern students won this year,” said Jesse Schroeder, instructor in mass communications and NWTV7 adviser. “It shows that the size of the university has nothing to do with the quality of knowledge and creativity that a student has. Even though we go up against universities that are 10 times our size, we do very well.”

All student entries in the annual contest are judged by professional broadcasters, with Northwestern competing against students in all other colleges in Oklahoma, including the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University and the University of Central Oklahoma.

Besides the awards ceremony, students and faculty were able to take part in workshops and sessions and were able to network with people in the industry.

Others from Northwestern attending besides the award winners and Schroeder were Tammy Brown, communication department chair; Sherryce Benson, Alva junior; Kendra Coats, Fairmont sophomore; Austin Curtis, Glencoe junior; Kasey Fowler, Arlington, Texas, senior; Joe Perez, Midwest City freshman; and Catherine Wells, Follett, Texas, senior.

“This is a very valuable event for our students,” Schroeder said. “Not only do they get to learn some great information, they also get to network with professional television and radio broadcasters in our state.”
