LISA HOLDER RECOGNIZED AS AN OKLAHOMA INNOVATIVE TEACHER

Dr. Lisa Holder, associate professor of education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, received special recognition last week at the 2008 Oklahoma Higher Education Teaching and Learning Conference held at Northeastern State University’s Center for Teaching and Learning.

As an Oklahoma Innovative Teacher, she was honored for integrating technology in her courses, while emphasizing the methods and psychology of teaching.

Dr. Lisa Holder, associate professor of education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, receives an Oklahoma Innovative Teacher Award from James Brittain, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Northeastern State University.

The award noted that Holder teaches her education courses via case study dialogue, hands-on activities, lecture and group assignments. Quoting a former student, the citation said, “Dr. Holder’s influence on me is profound, and through me, her work and deeds will spread. I want to model myself after her as an instructor.”

With the theme “Teaching 360,” the conference featured two main speakers: Dr. Ken Bain, director of the Teaching and Learning Resource Center at Montclair State University, and Dr. Barbara Millis, director of the University of Nevada-Reno Excellence in Teaching Program.

Conference participants also had the opportunity to participate in workshops, including Using Screenbook Maker, Infusing Purpose into Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Effectively Teaching Programming Logic and Design Using Alice, and You’re Boring: Why Students Do Not Pay Attention to Professors.

Holder has more than 20 years’ teaching experience and is certified by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. She earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwestern and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Oklahoma State University.
