Herning, a December 2007 graduate of Northwestern, received the award for the best undergraduate scholarly paper presented at a non-Sigma Tau Delta professional conference. An English major, she originally wrote the paper “Jack London and the Natural Order” for Dr. Sandra Petree’s American Literature since Whitman class.
She then presented the paper, which concentrates on London’s use of naturalism in his short stories, at Oklahoma Research Day (ORD) held at the University of Central Oklahoma in October 2007.
Herning said the research day required poster presentations to illustrate the process involved in research.
“In preparing for ORD,” she said, “I and other members of my chapter had to determine a way to represent the research for and composition of a literary research paper. I devoted much time to helping members of my Sigma chapter create posters using computer programs and electronic technology. Presenting the paper at ORD made it possible for me to submit it to Sigma Tau Delta.”
In addition to working in the J.W. Martin Library, Herning is applying for graduate school at Northwestern in the field of library science and information technology.
