FLOATS SOUGHT FOR NORTHWESTERN’S HOMECOMING PARADE

Float entries from campus and non-campus groups, as well as businesses, are being sought for Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s annual homecoming parade at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6.

First ($25), second ($15) and third ($10) place awards will be made in the categories of campus organizations or groups, off-campus non-profit organizations and commercial businesses, said Dr. Gayla Jordan, float coordinator for the homecoming committee.

In addition, each float in all categories will be considered for the President’s Award ($100 and engraved plaque) for the best overall float and the Alumni Association Award ($75) for an exceptional display of Ranger spirit.

Entry forms and contest rules are available on the Northwestern web site at:

www.nwosu.edu/homecmg/float/floats.html, at the Alva Chamber of Commerce office or by calling Jordan at (580) 327-8510 or e-mailing her at gsjordan@nwosu.edu. The deadline for entries is Friday, Sept. 28.

The old armory on Second Street has been made available by Alva Public Schools for float building and will open on Monday, Oct. 1. Any group that uses the armory must make a $15 refundable cleaning deposit in advance. The armory also will be open on Sunday, Oct. 7, for dismantling floats and general cleanup. Any group that does not participate in the cleanup will forfeit its deposit.

Floats must be lined up, facing south, on Third Street beginning at its intersection with Flynn Street. Floats will be judged during the parade on theme presentation, originality and construction. The 2007 homecoming theme is “Homecoming 007, Northwestern and Oklahoma BOND Forever.” Jordan emphasized that nothing that can be construed as a weapon will be allowed on the floats.

Campus organizations are eligible for up to $200 reimbursement of construction costs, if all pertinent criteria are met.
