ORDERS STILL BEING TAKEN FOR OKLAHOMA FLAG PROJECT AT NWOSU

Displaying several State of Oklahoma flags around the Northwestern Oklahoma State University campus this year is one way the university plans to celebrate the institution’s 110th birthday along with the state’s 100th.

Although the initial deadline for becoming a flag sponsor is Wednesday, Aug. 1, individuals and businesses still are encouraged to help with the on-campus celebration by ordering their flags soon.

For this project to be effective, a minimum of 30 flags are needed for a nice display around campus and about 20 flags have been ordered so far. With the help of the Northwestern Foundation, an initial order of flags will be made so they can be displayed in time for the start of school on Aug. 20, making additional flags available for purchase even after Wednesday’s deadline.

Larry Justice, who is charge of the flag project as a member of the campus 110/100 Centennial Promotions and Publicity Committee, said that once people see the flags flying on campus, he believes others will want to take part in the project, especially prior to the dedication of “The Ranger” statue tentatively scheduled for November.

“Join others now in celebrating 100 years of statehood and 110 years of our institution being a service to thousands of students from around the world,” Justice said.

The flags sell for $50 each and will be set out on poles on the lawn during special dates at the university, such as the first day of classes, the original first day of classes’ commemoration on Sept. 20, commencement exercises and other determined dates, so the flags will not be displayed every day.

When the celebration ends at Northwestern in May 2008, everyone who sponsored a flag will receive a displayed flag.

Names of individuals and/or businesses sponsoring the flags will be listed in Centennial special events programs and other university publications throughout the school year.
