MARY BRUNE BECOMES CERTIFIED NURSE EDUCATOR
Mary Brune, instructor in nursing at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, has earned the designation of Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the National League of Nursing.
Brune said the exam and certification were devised to distinguish academic nursing education as a specialty area through recognizing the specialized knowledge, skills and abilities that are included in that area of practice.
She said she pursued the certification because of a commitment to life-long learning and professional development.
“I want to be a more effective role model for the students I come in contact with,” she said.
“The nursing division is very proud of Mrs. Brune’s hard work,” said Dr. Carol McKenzie, chair of the division of nursing. “It is a rigorous process, including a very difficult examination, and she has worked diligently to achieve this honor. It is another indication of the upward movement of the nursing division at Northwestern and is great recognition of faculty success.”
Brune earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Northwestern in 1987 and worked several years in area hospitals before obtaining her master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2001.
She began teaching at her alma mater as an adjunct in the spring of 2002, becoming fulltime that fall. She is now the lead instructor in Adult Health and Introduction to Nursing Concepts.
Brune and her husband Delmer live in Waynoka. The couple has three children and 15 grandchildren.
