‘BIO-TOUCH’ COURSE TO BE OFFERED AT NORTHWESTERN’S KETTERMAN LAB
A unique, two-day “Bio-Touch” class is being offered by Northwestern Oklahoma State University from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 30 and 31. The sessions will be held at the Emma Lee Tucker Ketterman Clinical Skills Laboratory on the campus of Northwestern-Enid.
The nursing faculty at the university earlier voted to include the touch healing technique as a requirement for nursing students and faculty members, said Dr. Carole McKenzie, chair of the division of nursing.
“The faculty decided that students should learn Bio-Touch as a complementary therapy along with traditional medical studies,” McKenzie said.
Bio-Touch, also known as Bio-Touch Magnetic Touch Healing, is taught by the International Foundation of Bio-Magnetics (IFBM), an all-volunteer center in Tucson, Ariz., that is funded through donations, membership dues, class fees and sales of educational materials.
Since 1999, IFBM has worked in collaboration with the Human Energy Systems Laboratory at the University of Arizona to research the effects of Bio-Touch on various health conditions.
“Research has shown that the Bio-Touch technique improves stress reduction, lowers blood pressure, increases glucose metabolism and reduces pain,” McKenzie said. “It generally increases immune response, decreases pain response and improves the relaxation response.”
McKenzie explained that practitioners use the first two fingers of each hand to apply light “butterfly” pressure on touch receptors located at specific points under the skin.
“You do not need to be a nurse or have any medical experience to use this technique,” she said. “Children can learn the method and it is completely non-invasive.”
The two-day class costs $48, which includes a DVD and book. “This is a heavily discounted rate,” McKenzie said.
Jennifer Phelps, vice president of IFBM, will lead the sessions and McKenzie will be one of the instructors.
