SYMPHONIC BAND TO CELEBRATE FINE ARTS BUILDING’S CENTENNIAL
The Symphonic band of Northwestern Oklahoma State University will present its final concert of the semester at 7:30 p.m., Friday, in Herod Hall Auditorium with the premiere of a special piece of music. The concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.
The band, led by Dr. Kathryn Lindberg, director of bands, will feature “A Little Learning Is a Dangerous Thing,” written by Dr. Eric Honour and commissioned to commemorate the Oklahoma and Fine Arts Building centennials.
Honour, a graduate of the University of Florida, has been a member of the faculty of the University of Central Missouri since 2000. He also earned a master’s degree in saxophone performance and composition and a doctorate in composition from Northwestern University.
The concert will open with “Golden Festival Overture” written by James Barnes, a native of Hobart. Next, Yvonne Colle-Burden and Lindsey Brodowski, senior instrumental music majors, will each conduct a movement of Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E-flat.”
Also included in the program are the marches “In Storm and Sunshine” (to commemorate Oklahoma weather) and “The Trombone King,” Alfred Reed’s “A Festival Prelude” (written for the Tri-State Music Festival), Richard Strauss’ “Allerseelen” and Percy Grainger’s “Shepherd’s Hey.”
Honour is scheduled to present a guest saxophone/composition lecture-recital in room 200 of Fine Arts from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday. For more information, contact Dr. Stephen Kingsbury at (580) 327-8692.
